Attached are a few pics from the bowling party that we got invited to. The Down Syndrome Association of Greater St Louis has a holiday party every year and it was at Tropicana Bowl in Clayton. A few of my family members went along with us. We had fun and AJ enjoyed sitting on Santa and Mrs. Claus's lap!!!!

Happy Birthday Alexander!

Well our little man just turned one on Monday! Yeah for AJ! He has been through so many things this year its hard to believe its only been a year!

We had a party at the house on Sunday and all his family and some friends were there. I think he really enjoyed himself.

1 year photo!!!

Alexander will be one year old on November 24th!!! Yeah! I really can't believe he is nearly a year old....he has been through so much! Well here is his one year photo and I really don't like it. It was the best one though.

This past week we also got his big boy haircut! I will post some pics after his party and you can see how cute it looks! He really looks so grown up now!

Halloween Pics

Well we finally got our Halloween pics back! Wasn't he sooooo cute! Also here is a pic at a hayride in October!

Also this past week we went to the heart doctor and the ENT at Children's Hospital. Alexander doesn't have to go back to the heart doctor for 6 months now! We were very ecstatic about that. He also is off of his dieuretic and only on his heart medicine. Yeah!

So at the ENT we did a hearing test with the audiologist. Then we saw the Dr. Molter. He is a very happy kid friendly man. He said Alexander has fluid in his right ear and that he will need tubes. He has never had a ear infection so I was a little confused. Apparently babies/kids with Down Syndrome have smaller ear canals and normally have alot of ear infections. He said he is very aggresive with down babies because it will affect his speech. So in 6 weeks we go back to the doctor and probably have tubes after the first of the year.

Dirtbiking

A few pics from the dirtbike race that John was in on Sunday. All proceeds were donated to the Toys for Tots. John hadn't raced in like 5 years so he was really sore. He is slowly getting back into it though. BTW Alexander didn't mind the noise though and we got really dusty out there.

October Fun!

We decided to dress up Alexander as a Bumble Bee for Halloween this year. He was really cute! In Edwardsville we actually go trick or treating on the 30th. They have a parade for the town on the 31st so no one is actually trick or treating on the 31st. We went around our neightborhood with our cousins then went to a friends house. Alexander seemed really sleepy that night so he wasn't full of smiles like he usually is. On the 31st though we went to Granite City to see a few Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and of course Grandma and Grandpa....and his favorite baby sitters....Heather Keith, Nana Deb, Grandma Carole and Grandpa John!!! He had more fun that night!

The wedding!!

Well the last Yehling wedding went really well and Alexander was a trooper once again! We put him in his pack in play and he fell asleep during the reception. We stayed at the Hotel because it was at the Sheraton in Westport so then we just rolled him upstairs in the pack in play. I stole these pictures from Heather so I will soon post some others of Alexander by himself.
BTW he is doing really well at his babysitters and he is quite spoiled by her. Her kids love him too, they are teenagers! Alexander really wants to get mobile but he is having a tough time. He doesn't have the arm strength to crawl. He still loves standing though, the therapists think he might walk before he crawls. We are going to teach him to crawl though. The therapists say its a must (for Alexander), apparently you learn alot of speech development with crawling.

10 month check-up

Yesterday was Alexander's 9 month check up at 10 months. He had to get a couple shots - but he was a trooper. He pouted for just a second but he did good. He is right on target with his weight and height. He is becoming such a big boy!

We also got his halloween costume, thanks to Aunt Heather. We will suprise you with that when the time comes though. He is so cute with it on!

This weekend is my brother's wedding! You should see Alexander's cute outfit. We will post some pictures after the wedding.

Post Op Appointment!

Alexander had his post operation appointment on Tuesday morning. He had great reviews. Also, as of right now it looks like he won't have to have anymore surgeries either. :) She said we will for sure know at the next appointment. That appointment will be at the end of October.

Alexander can now be around other people and we can go out and about. He loves going places.

Well I had a dentist appointment yesterday morning so my dad watched Alexander. When I got back my dad had cut his hair. It looks so cute and he looks like a little boy!

Also our carpet is dry again but we have to get new carpet now! It stinks real bad in our basement. John and I wanted new carpet anyway but we didn't want this to happen.

Hurricane Ike

The living room / bar area!!!

Behind the bar...man look at those puddles!
Going from the unfinished part to the finshed part!

Yes I know we are not in the Hurricane path but we sure got the weather to go along with it! Well this morning John and I were having a nice morning watching this crazy storm outside our bedroom window. Well I decided to go down stairs to see if any water was coming down our walls. Well next thing I know our drains were back up and our basement was flooding. The city sewers were backing up. So needless to say we having been having all kinds of fun cleaning up the basement today! Here is our lovely puddles of water! :(

Making Progress!!!

Alexander is doing great! His incision is almost completely healed as well. It is amazing how fast the little ones recover. You almost think "wow that baby just went through heart surgery". He is rolling over again and laughing away. We go back to the doctor on Tuesday to get his post-op check up. Hopefully everything will go okay. We will get x-rays, echo and ekg of his heart. Hopefully this well mean that we can be around germs again. I will probably go back to work too! That's if we find a sitter. :( John works for himself so we need health insurance.

Also, with in the past couple days Alexander's first tooth is starting to pop through his gum. You definitley can tell too! He has been getting very fussy, oragel and tylenol have been a blessing though. I am so glad he is finally getting a tooth, he is almost 10 months!

Home from the Hospital!

Today we got to come home from the hospital. Alexander is doing so well too! He stayed up most of the day and then we gave him a bath at about 6:30. He loved it! We only could sponge bath him so my mom helped me. :)

I really think he knows he is back home now too! As the day went home he was more and more himself!

Going Home - We think!

So when the surgeon came in today for his routine check, he said he thought Alexander would go home today. The cardiologist came in later and said the same thing. YEAH! So when the nurses came in they said well we heard Alexander might go home today or tomorrow. I was irritated but didn't say anything. I think they say that to have there but.

The cardiologist actually said it would be about noon time and asked if we had any question for when we get home.

He is doing good again today. Except the baby next to him did wake him up everytime he was hungry or needed a diaper changed. I stayed last night and I woke up everytime too! He is loud compared to our baby! :)

So check back soon so I can up date everyone that we are home! :)

Out of the ICU

So Alexander is finally out of the ICU. He is on the regular floor now. Yesterday, Saturday, he was moved. He didn't have a good day though. We think he was in alot of pain so eventually we finally gave him some morphine. We were trying only to give him tylenol but he wasn't having it. John stayed over night with him. He said that he woke up everytime the baby next to him woke up. Alexander isn't use to alot of noise so I think it is hard for him to sleep with all that noise.

This morning when I got here he was off his oxygen and ready to go. He is full of smiles again and feeling much better. He just got his last IV out of his head. So right now he is only on monitors. The surgeon said he would probably get out of the hospital tomorrow! Fingers crossed with lots of prayers.

Day 4

Day 4 was much better today! Alexander was up all day. He got it drainage tube taken out of his chest& his central venous iv. He did have to get another IV put in though. They put it in his forehead. The nurse said it looks worse than what it really is though. He was such a good boy today. :) I finally got to hold him too! We were trying to get him to cough some by sitting him up. He didn't really like to sit up with his head up. I think it hurt his chest. I know it would hurt mine. But all and all today was a good day! Tomorrow should be better because he will be on the regular floor if everything goes as planned over night. His surgeon said he didn't want to move him today just because of what had happened on Wed.

P.S. Alexander has never really sucked a binky and now it is his best friend i am not kidding. It has been in his mouth for the past 24 hours non-stop.

Day 3

When I got here today Alexander wasn't as well as when we left last night. He was getting some help from the breathing machine. They were trying to do this first. If he didnt cooperate then they would have to incubate him. (Put him to sleep and put the breathing tube down his throat) So far so good he hated the face mask and now they have him with the tubes in his nose. His SATS are just ok . This is all because he had some fluid around his lungs and he wasn't peeing. So now he is peeing like a race horse with the catheteer back in and his SATS are going up with the help of the oxygen. Alexander is still in the ICU. We aren't going to get our hopes up too much about him moving since he didn't get to move today. :( Maybe tomorrow! I will keep you posted.

Keep Praying all the prayers are helping! Remember he is our little fighter!

Day 2 Evening

Alexander was doing good tonight. He had 8ounces of formula at 3 and then had some bananas at about 4:30. He had a full belly so we took a nap!

His oxygen levels were starting to drop to about 85 to 90 without his breathing machine so they gave him a little of air....

At about 7:30 we gave him about 4 ounces of food and again he was much happier. He was crying it was so sad but once he got some food he was happy and asleep again.

I left tonight at about 9pm but will go back in the morning and tomorrow John will be staying the night again.

Alexander should be moving to the floor tomorrow. :) Probably tomorrow afternoon!

Day 2

Alexander is doing excellent today, still in the CICU though. They took his breathing machine off and pulled his feeding tube. He also got his catheter taken out. Daddy was glad to see that go. He will be able to eat at 3pm, 6 hours after he got his breathing tubes pulled. Alexander was taken off his sedation medicine and his painkiller before the pulled the breathing tube. They did give him some morphine after they pulled his tube. He was not a happy camper.

About at 12 we gave him more morphine and turned on the TV and he settled again. We can't wait for 3 pm to feed him. He will be so much happier! :)

D-Day

Today's operation went great! Alexander is in the CICU right now. He is on a ventilator but probably will be taken off of it tomorrow. He was looking around when we went in there but of course he is sedated as well. The good news is that he didn't have to get his valve replaced with a homograft (cadavar part). They thought that his pulmonary valve was small but that he should grow with the size that he is. Alexander's SAT's were at 100% today and that is the first time we have ever seen that. :)

Keep us in your prayers!

Pre-Op

So today was Alexander's Pre-Op appointment. He did really well and the doctors and surgeons were happy with what they saw. They didn't see anything that they didn't already know about. He had a cardiac catherization today and a bunch of other test. They put a lead through his main artery in his right leg to get some pictures and to find out more about his surgery before actual surgery. He woke up easily and he was even eating at about 8:15. He had 4 ounces of Pedialyte and 4 of Formula. We didn't want to over do it.

So tonight Daddy stayed at the hospital with Alexander and Mommy came home to a very quiet house. Surgery is at about 8am tomorrow and he should be out by 2 or 3 pm. We let you know more when I know! Pray for the little man!

P.S. The picture to the right is his 9month picture which was taken yesterday on his 9month birthday!

Pre-Op

Well today we went to Children's Hospital for Alexander's Pre-operation appointment. Well he was suppose to be put to sleep but the plan changed. They only took his x-rays. While we were waiting for his anestigiologist (m/s) the surgeon and cardiologist decided they want to do a cardiac catherization. So instead of putting him to sleep today and again next week they decided to schedule it all together.

Alexander sure was a trooper through all of this. He was able to eat since 8pm last night and by the time he was able to eat it was 11am. He chowed his bottle down when I gave it to him. I am so proud of him though he didn't even cry for any food either. Just to be picked up!!! :)

So they rescheduled everything for August 25th and the operation is August 26th. He will now stay over night and have his operation the next day!

Summer Fun!

At the Anhueser Busch Brewery!!

Watching Fireworks on July 4th with Grandma!!
Daddy suprising Mommy with some cute Birthday pictures for Mommy's Card!!!
Having fun after my bath!!! Aren't I so cute!

The summer is soon coming to a end for us! We have had fun boating, swimming and just having fun! :) We will be preping Alexander for his big surgery. On Friday he has to go to the hospital and be put to sleep. The doctors want to do a EKG, Echiocardiogram , X-rays and blood work will he is sleeping. :( Mommy took the day off work so we can both be at the hospital that day. The surgery is still 2 weeks away though but we think about it all the time.
He is doing so great now! He can sit up, talks all the time and of course loves his food! :) He weighs about 20 pounds.
Here are some pics from the last few weeks!

Surgery!

Well on July 1st we went to the cardiologist over here. Everything went well and they did a echo and a ekg. Alexander's Sat levels are only at 75% now. :( Our Doctor at Children's Hospital said that she thought they would do surgery in the next two months.

We were a little upset about that cause back in England they said 12-18 months. We want best for Alexander so that is what we will do.

Over than having to have his surgery we are all doing well! The 4th of July or Independence day was over the weekend and Alexander loved the fireworks. He was trying to reach at the fireworks. It was so cute. He absolutely loved them!!!!

Hello again!!

Daddy and AJ on the Boat Memorial Day Weekend!!!

Best Friends by default ..... the 2 AJ's

At the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk!!!

Hello everyone! Well life is a little hectic now....Mommy is back to work and Daddy is home with Alexander. This is my fourth week of work and it is tiring. I am working back at Glazer's but in the Inventory Department. It is nice to get away but if we didn't need insurance I wouldn't be working. Also, I just got approved for the Master's program in Kinesiology with the emphasis in Adaptive Physical Education. I will just take one class next semester but its a start.

Alexander is doing wonderful. He sat up for a few seconds all by himself on Saturday night. He holds on to things if you put him next to a table or chair. He is really moving along. His Developmental Therapist comes on a Wednesday and the Physical Therapist on Friday. He is starting to learn sign language too. By the way he is still smiling too. :)

John got a notice in the mail that they have started working on his work visa. He can't wait to start working. It will probably be the middle of August or September. In the meantime we are looking for a babysitter to stay at home with AJ.

As a family we have been very busy....we have been going on the boat, doing charity walks and just enjoying the HOT summer! :)

DS Walk

Well over the weekend we went to the Budddy Walk sponsored by the Down Syndrome Group of Greater ST Louis. John saw it advertised and we thought we should do it. We had so much fun. There was 13 of us that went out to support Alexander. They had all kinds of kids toys , a painting area and free food and drinks after the walk. It was really a good time. It was very HOT that day though.

Here is a pic of us and Fredbird. (He is the mascot of our baseball team over here)

Update - We are in America!!!

Hello everyone! Okay so we finally have the internet! We have been in the states now about 2 and half weeks and it has flown over. We have been so busy.

Alexander is doing great and loves the weather. We found his new favorite toy now too. He has a Jumperoo and he absoulutely loves it!!! Thanks to his Uncle Paul. We also finally got the Bumbo seat too and he sits in it so good. He can't sit on his own yet, but he is almost there. Oh and now that we are in America and we don't have a bassinet or moses basket Alexander has to sleep all night in his own bed in his own room! He has been doing so well too! As of this week he is finally back in his own routine. Goes to bed around 8 and up around 6:30.

We went to his new pedeatrician last week and we really like her. She has a couple patients with Alexander's same heart problem so it was a little reassuring. We met with his early intervention program too and the Physical and Occupational Therapists are suppose to come out in a few weeks to do a evaluation on him. And Alexander's next heart appointment isn't until July 1st and that is at Children's Hospital in St Louis.

A Little Vacation to Amsterdam!

So we got Alexander's passport on Friday and then decided to take a little vacation. We went to Amsterdam on the ferry! We were only on the ferry for 2 nights and we got to visit Amsterdam all day Wednesday. We wish we would have been there longer but we really enjoyed our time away! Alexander had alot of fun and was excellent. All he did today was sleep! We must have worn him out! He was glad to be back home! :)

Today we only have 9 days till we leave! We have a get together with our friends and fam on Sat and then appointments next week and we are set to take off!

Making Strides!!!

Alexander is doing wonderful and the doctors are so proud of him. He got the okay to fly from the cardiologist too! sigh - What a relief! His sat levels have to be above 80% to fly and his were right on yesterday. Dr. Kirk said they might go down a little in the air but that is normal with everyone. He said he might turn a little blue but its nothing to worry about.

Just after he was born his sats were at 65% , so considering he didn't have his op for a day and a half we know he will be fine!!!! :) He wasn't on any oxygen before the op either.

He is rolling over all the time now as well. They other day he rolled over 4 times in a row. We have hard wood floors and he was on the rug, so that is as far as mommy would let him go! :) We also received his passport today as well! We can officially go to America now! Yeah!

So as of today we have 15 days until we leave! :)
P.S. This is Alexander playing in a exersaucer at his friends birthday party!!! :)

Alexander is a US Citizen

So we had our appointment in London to get Alexander's passport, to report his birth abroad and to register for his ssn. It was a long two days but we managed. So now we are waiting on his passport and we can officially go back to the states. They said it should take about 2 weeks. Yeah!

Alexander is doing great and he keeps rolling over. He can nearly roll from his back to his front now too. His one arm gets in the way and he gives up. He tries hard though.

We go back to the heart doctor on April 17th. He is doing wonderful though!!!

Just Packing!

Not much too new! Just the same ole same old. We have been packing all week and getting quotes from shipping company's. Hopefully the things will be gone soon! Its takes 4-12 weeks to get to the states. At that rate we won't get all our things until July!

Alexander is still our growing little boy. He loves to go on walks with Mommy and since the weather has been acting nice we have been taking advantage of it.

Saturday, March 22, 2008

Rolling Over!

So our big boy is starting to roll over and its just not a fluke. This morning he rolled again 5 times from his stomach to his back. He is trying to go from his back to his stomach but he just gets stuck in a pretzel. His head is as far back as possible but he hasn't mastered the technique yet. He doesn't realize that you have to put one let over the other. It won't be long now though. He is doing so good and we are thoroughly impressed with him everyday. His muscles are so strong. :)

Oh and sorry but I can't get a good picture now either. He sees the flash on the camera and stops laughing and just stares at me. He doesn't like the light in his face.

My Growing Little Boy!

Alexander is now 16 weeks old and thriving, how time has slipped away. He is 13 pounds already too. This coming Wednesday we go for his last shot until he is a year old. I feel so sorry for him because this time he gets one in each leg and one his arm. Poor little guy. You would think he would be use to getted pricked and battered but he sure isn't. He is starting to get a little more vocal as well. As I have told most of you, his voice is so soft. You can't hear him crying if we are in the next room. When I go to the Baby Groups I am like "Alexander don't learn how to scream like that okay little buddy." I guess he has been listening because he still has a pretty soft voice.

His physical therapist, along with his early intervention teacher were at the house yesterday. They are so thrilled at how Alexander is coming along. They think he is progressing just like any other 3 and half month old. They believe he should be sitting up on his own by the time he is 5 months old. I can't wait...we practice with him all the time.

Last weekend the family had a long weekend in Wales. John, Alexander, the dog Biddy and I all headed off for our first little vacation. Wales is just over 5 hours from here. The way there went pretty quick and we got to our friends by early evening. John's friend Ben, was ready to start cooking and giving us drinks the minute we walked in the door. We stayed at their house 3 nights and did a little of the tourist things while we were in Wales. On our way home we left at 10am and stopped in Bath, at Stonehenge and in Oxford.

We didn't get home until 11pm that night but we had a fun first trip with the baby. When we got home John was playing with Alexander because we were like "Oh great he is going to be a nightmare tonight cause all he has done is sleep in the car." So anyway John was on the floor with Alexander and guess what he ROLLED OVER! Of course Mommy didn't see it either. He hasn't done it again yet but I am working on it!!!!

Oh by the way, I forgot to mention, my little boy has been sleeping through the nights for about the past month or so too! Don't be jealous for all you with little ones! :) He goes to bed at 8pm and wakes up at about 7am. He is my little sleeper.

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Coming Home! YEAH!

Well we finally got word last Monday that John was approved his visa. This means that we will be moving back to the states! YEAH! We can't believe that this is actually happening. It has been nearly 3 years since John has been here and 2 for me.

So now we are busy sorting everything out. We have been busy booking the flights, booking a flight for the dog, finding a shipping company and getting rid of everything we don't bring back and of course finding doctors for Alexander and making appointments and etc. It has only been a week but has already been hectic.

Okay so we will be back on May 4th! Can't wait!

10.5 weeks

I am calling all my family and friends back home cause I want to tell them hello and I can't wait to meet you all!

Today was a fun day for Alexander. He met his Early Intervention teacher. We thought they weren't going to come out until Easter but they came today. We got a new toy to play with that has all sorts of mirrors and bells on it. Alexander loves touching it and listening to the bells. They will be coming out to the house once a week from now on. We all got weighed today and he is 11 pounds.

Today we went to church for Ash Wednesday and he actually stayed awake. He loves listening to all the music. He got passed around in church today. All the ladies that I sat by wanted a cuddle.

Gaining Still Yeah!

I am still gaining weight! Yeah! Today I weighed 10 pounds and 13 ounces. That's great - he is still at the 75% for Down Syndrome Babies.

Also women in charge of the Early Intervention Program over here came out to the house. The program is called Portage. It was originally started in Portage, WI. But once everything is set up they will come out to the house once a week. They will monitor Alexander's progress each week and loan us specific toys to let us play with. Once we need the speech and occupational therapies they will work along side them. So Alexander would be in this program until he is 3 then he would go to Nursery over here.

Fingers crossed we will be back in the states though. They said if we were then they will try to help us contact the right people in Illinois. :) Ahhh - a sigh of relief!

Immigration

Just a little update on our immigration. All the paper work has been sent to the Embassy and they are working on our case. In December they requested some information on Baby Brewster about his birth and medical status. We have now sent all of that paperwork to the Embassy and we think that we should find out the answer in the next couple of weeks! Please keep us in your prayers! We would love to move back to the states and then you all can see our little bundle of joy!

8 week check

Alexander had his 8 week check yesterday. The doctor was really impressed on how good he is doing. He said his strength is great. I told him we work with him everyday doing exercising to build up his muscle tone. Alexander also had his first set of immunizations. The first one he didn't even notice then the next one you saw him turn bright red and his pout lip came out. :) He cried for just a minute then he feel asleep on my shoulder. We also had him weighed and measured. He is now 10 pounds and 6 ounces and 23 inches long. He is doing excellent.

Slowly gaining!

Today was our first day at the baby clinic. Here in England you can go to your local GP and they do a baby clinic every week. All they do at the baby clinic is weigh and measure your baby. It is for well babies.

So today Alexander got weigh and he was exactly 10 pounds. I was hoping he had gained more but maybe next time! We didn't measure him today but I think that he probably is longer too. He is already outgrowing some his sleepers. He is too long for them. :) He will be tall like his moms family!

I've gained weight!

Today Alexander got weighed and he was 9pounds and 14 ounces. That is great news. The health visitors are really happy with his progress. He has gained 8 ounces since last week. I can definitely tell that he has been wanting to eat more as well.

His nasty cold is still here but getting a little better. Down syndrome babies are prone to chest infections and because there ear and nose canals are typically smaller they take longer to get rid of. Poor little guy, he is sure a fighter.

BTW his infection in his eye is gone as well...it was conjuctivitis.

Alexander's cough :(

Alexander has had a nasty cough for the past few days! So again we are being worried parents and I took him to the doctor with me today. I had to go for my postnatal review - so I have the clear now. It's diet time now!

Well the doctor said that his chest sounded normal and there was nothing to be worried about. Of course he didn't cough one time while we were there, so I guess he decided to make a liar out of me! :) Tomorrow the health visitor comes out so hopefully he has put some more weight on!

BTW today Alexander met his first friend today. The neighbor just had a baby girl and she is a week and a half old. It was so cute they just kept looking and reaching out at each other. I will post the pic of Alexander and Pippa soon!

Update!

Went to the cardiologist and the respirtory doctors today! Alexander is doing great ! He has gained weight and now weighs 9lbs and 6oz. and is 22 inches long. He is a big boy! He is in the 75% percentile for down syndrome children. They have a different weight chart they go off of for Down babies. ???

The cardiologist was very happy with Alexander. He is still on his dieuretic and his aspirin everyday. He will virtually be on his aspirin for years to come but his dieuretic he will go off by his next appointment. He still has to grow a little bit to grow into his shunt but he is almost there. We did find out from Dr. Kirk today that he will have his next surgery at 12-18 months and most likely one when he is a adolscent and then a adult. This was a little bit of a shock to the system. We have thought the next op would take care of everything but I guess not.

The respiratory doctor, Dr. Spencer was also happy with Alexander. He is still keeping a eye on him though. He is watching to see if he possible has sleep apnea. Alot of Down Syndrome babies also have problems with there lungs, about 40%. He is happy with his progress though. We are just suppose to keep a eye on his breathing. Most people have heard that Down babies have floppy muscles well that goes along with there lungs, alot of times they are floppy as well.

So all in all everyone is happy with Alexander and so are we!!!!
